Charlotte DIYs a practical & panelled entryway

Found yourself rushing your kids out the door & scrambling to find all your coats & bags? Charlotte (@holman_home) is here to teach you how you can DIY an organised hallway.
Having began sharing her home in 2018, Charlotte has now mastered DIY and posts her home styling hacks on the regular. We sat down with Charlotte to talk about her home & the process behind her hallway transformation, where she used panelling, paint & hooks to create an uber practical entryway. She even DIY'd a mini-version for her kids 👨‍👨‍👧‍👧

Pre-planned renovations

“We purchased our home knowing it will need work and hoping to create extra space. When we moved in, our home needed a lot of changes & updating, some we have already done and some have taken longer. Initially I did have a plan for the design and we painted a lot of the walls, however after living in our home for a few years, the colours didn’t work and the space never felt quite finished.”

The hallway project

Skirting

"From the start, I knew the look I wanted to achieve. Due to our home being old, I didn't want to remove anything and instead enhance and improve what we had. So, I used skirting board covers which meant I didn't have to remove the existing skirting."

Panelling

"I fell in love with panelling when doing our bedroom, however I wanted a slightly different style. Cutting the panelling was the hardest part as it's not something I’ve done before, however I am really proud of the look I have achieved."

Painting

"I always find choosing colours the hardest part as I want to be adventurous but also safe. So I played around with a few ideas and thought that if I didn’t like it I could always repaint."

Choosing hooks  🤔

“I love brass – I’m currently installing some new brushed brass light switches, so when I saw CAREY & LEVI in brass, I knew they were perfect. I am creating a space for my children and the CAREY are the perfect shape & size for a kid’s space. For the adults area I needed double hooks that were strong and the LEVI fit this perfectly as well as being stylish.”

A mix of interior styles

“I feel I have definitely found my interior style – I'm not so sure what it's called distinctly, but it's definitely a mix of styles. I love wood and its natural aesthetic, it works so well with soft and dark tones. I have always been artistic and incorporating my interior style is the perfect creative outlet."

Paint above all 🖌

“Painting is definitely my favourite DIY hack. It’s the simplest of DIYs but it can make such a huge difference to a space, from how it makes you feel to how the room feels.”

Charlotte’s DI-Why

“I love how personal DIY is – you are creating something for you, by you. No one else will have anything that looks like what you have done – it will always be unique.
The feeling of 'I did that' is also very rewarding when a project is finished. I am always willing to give it a go and if it doesn’t work, it’s okay, things can be redone or changed.”

Fave DIY Queens 👑

Instagram is definitely my favourite social media platform, as I find searching hashtags make finding inspiration easy.

Refreshing lemonade 🍋

“Music is always great to keep me motivated, but when it comes to drinks, I'm no tea or coffee drinker. Instead I'm a big fan of traditional lemonade – it’s just so refreshing.”

Throwback tunes  👯‍♀️

“I listen to a huge mix of music and I’m always a sucker for a throwback, especially old school rock/pop from the 00s/10s and old RnB. I normally pop on the music channels and search for a throwback or play Capital Xtra on my phone. A few tracks I always listen to are:”
